Types of Motives for Deceit

People use various types of motives for deceit to cover up other factors about themselves that are shameful or that they don’t want anyone else knowing about them. There are many types of motives for deceit that can cause a person to make the wrong decisions. Being deceitful can be avoided if a person is just truthful from the beginning. Practicing better character will also keep a person from having motives to be deceitful to themselves and to others.

Insecurity/Fear

Fear and insecurity both fall into the same category of types of motives for deceit because they cause the same type of outcomes. A person can fear or be insecure about many things. For example, a person might have to make a speech in front of hundreds of people soon, but they are fearful and insecure about what the people that they will be speaking in front of will think about them. In this case they might pretend to be sick or just avoid the whole occasion altogether for any other reason that they might come up with. This is being deceitful because it isn’t true that the person feels the way they say they feel; they are making up a lie.

Unhappiness in a Relationship

Spouses and dating mates use types of motives of deceit everyday when they are not happy with their current relationship. A lot of times the person might not be ready to let their spouse go or get a divorce so they simply pretend that they are still interested with the one they are currently with while they are cheating on that person. Another type of motive for deceit in this case is that the person is not ready to leave their current lover because they would not be financially stable on their own. So they stay with their spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend until they know they can make it on their own; it’s called, "Playing the part."

Laziness at Work or School

A person that is lazy will usually use certain types of motives for deceit, make up all sorts of excuses as to why they have not finished their duties or daily tasks; this could be with school or at a job. When a person is extremely lazy they are usually motivated to be deceitful towards those around them whom it will affect.

A student that is in school might be asked by their parents to do their homework or else they will not be able to participate in fun activities. The child might simply lie about finishing their work so that they can get off easily or they might persuade their parents by telling them that they will finish the work later. The consequences of this deceit are that the parents could find out that the child is lying and that they did not finish their homework like they said they did.

This could be the same with a job. People in the workplace use types of motives for deceit quite often. Sometimes people are even motivated to get other workers to complete work tasks for them and later they receive the good praise for the work being finished. As with any other deceit situation, this can only lead to trouble. The person that actually completed the task could despise the deceitful person and notify the supervisor of the truth.
